In 2015 the TRFM Gippsland League has partnered with Apprenticeships Group Australia to develop a Rookie of the Year award to recognise the talented footballers and netballers around our league.
There will be one netballer and one footballer nominated each month with a final winner to be named at the TRFM Gippsland League presentation night.
Netball Nomination for April
Daisy Hill – Traralgon (Goal Shooter/Goal Attack)
Daisy has played netball with Traralgon Football Netball Club for the past three and a half years and currently plays bottom age as an under 17s player, while also forcing her way into a very talented A-grade team.
Daisy is an incredibly gifted young netballer. With her impressive height she has the ability to be a strong holding goal shooter but also has the agility to play as a running goal attack. For the 2015 season Daisy has executed close to 90 per cent shooting accuracy and her rebounding ability is rarely beaten. However, it is not only Daisy’s height and accurate goal shooting that separates her from other players. She also demonstrates impressive defensive pressure, which increases her impact on any game. Her love for netball is obvious by her determination to continually practice and improve her skills. Her kind and encouraging nature makes her an asset to any team.
Daisy has represented the TRFM Gippsland League in the 17-and-under side for Eastern region state league this season and was named most valuable player for the competition as well as part of the all-star team for the 17&U eastern region. She has also trained with Eastern region academy as well as Monash Storm U19 team and the Gippsland Storm open team
Daisy is definitely one to watch for the future in the TRFM Gippsland League.
Netball Nomination for May
Sally Deller – Bairnsdale Football Netball Club (Goal Keeper/Goal Defence/Goal Shooter)
Sally is currently playing her fourth year at Bairnsdale in the 17&U and A-grade teams. Sally is a tall defender who has smart game sense and uses her long arms to great advantage, tallying many intercepts, tips, deflections and rebounds to her name each game. She has recently swapped from defence to offence and stepped into the goal shooter position without any goaling coaching and shooting at high percentage (85 per cent) which for such a young player is extremely exciting to watch.
Along with making the step to A-grade over the last two seasons, Sally was awarded the B-grade best-and-fairest for 2014 and has trained with the Gippsland Academy for the past two seasons, along with representing her school Gippsland Grammar at the Waverley International Schools Netball Championships. Adding to her resume, Sally is part of the U19 Peninsula Waves Victorian Netball League development squad.
Football Nomination for April
Michael Jacobsen – Traralgon Football Netball Club (Forward/ Midfielder)
Michael is a hard working small forward/mid fielder with uncanny skills for gaining possession of the football in the contest. A good mark for his size and an excellent kick on either foot, Michael is still learning the game, but has slotted into the senior side and will keep improving, with an exciting future ahead of him.
Michael has represented the club at interleague level and TAC cup with Gippsland Power through his junior career. Michael still holds ambitions of making VFL ranks in the near future and is a worthy recipient of an AGA Rookie of the Year nomination.
Football Nomination for May
Riley Hogarth – Morwell Football Netball Club – (Centre in U18s and Half Back in seniors)
Riley played his first senior game at Morwell in the TRFM Gippsland League in 2014 as a 16-year-old. He has continued on in 2015, playing all 10 seniors games so far. Riley is a disciplined defender who reads the game very well and possesses great foot skills and strong hands. A clever footballer who rarely picks a bad option, Riley runs the ball off the half-back line and sets up attacks. He can move forward to play a hit up role or rotate through the midfield.
Riley is the current captain of the TRFM Gippsland League U18 interleague team and has represented the league for the past two years. Riley was awarded the AFL Victoria medal for Gippsland League against Yarra Valley in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Championships in May and was awarded the Mid Gippsland player of the Evans Petroleum Cup carnival in 2013. He also captained the U16 Yinnar premiership team in 2013, before making the move to Morwell.
Riley has a big future in the TRFM Gippsland League and is a worthy nominee for AGA Rookie of the Year.
